Originally created in 1782 by Gen. George Washington to recognize meritorious service, the Purple Heart was later changed during World War 2 to recognize combat injuries and deaths.
As of June 2022, it is estimated that over 1.9 million Purple Hearts have been awarded to American service men and women across all branches.
